Saying hello to today snack! It's a local and traditional snacks, mostly known into Indonesian villagers who held a wedding celebration or having thankful momentum or syukuran. Therefore a pocketful of food/snack almost being as option to be thankful sign to shared. I don't intend to say a villager snack just because it did only exist when attending villager's wedding or in modest, a rustic level. Nope. Not a purpose. Beside it is useless and I more excited to know and identify what are kinds of them. Since my family from Mom's side running into family business, we had a lot of workers come from villages or any region and along by time they had, they also bringing the culture, attitude and celebrate any joy such their kid proposal, wedding, birthday, circumcision etc with mostly celebrated in Javanese tradition which there are procedures to be happened. Give an example, a wedding tradition in Javanese culture has taking many preparation and so the steps or procedures to held from before and after the wedding, involving the help from entire families, relatives to participate on the events. A family social, the gathering moment, that's how the soul of these culture showing, of course including the sacred fact behind every procedures. It's interesting part, in my opinion, to see the different culture, to implemented them in life wherever we are, to learn and gain good meaning in one point and be opened to how it influenced people's life too, as well as to see any tradition we all have and knows, the same share of joy and happiness wish of beginning life. Back to topic, let me share snacks that sending as thankful sign (I'm thankful I can enjoy them).
From left above are eggroll, we called these crunchy as Kue Semprong. Sweet in general, light brown staying for original color, colorful is in some case of variety. Light snack, you can make them in basic non sticky pan, rolling them and done, or instead using an iron egg roll maker also available.
To the right, it commonly said Kembang Goyang. Kembang means flower and Goyang means shake (yeah right, it so weird if translated to shake flower). It is how these flower-shaped snack is shaken on deep frying style until the dough out from the mold and being solid. Sweet taste and usually yellow colored to attract more intention. These snack also get a spot to sold in many gift shop. But I should be honest, since I've been eating enough of this from childhood, I might getting bored and also these snack quite hard edible for it wasn't typical thin crunchiness, may because the dough is thick layered.
Hmm.. now what do you think about the snack in the middle? Remind you something like a rope or specifically, a worm? Yes it's right. Still, these crunchy (yeah all of them) in savory (or sweet) taste and easy bite. From the ingredients such glutinous starch, yolk and oil (for simple recipe) these snack also getting its spot to be favorite crackers. The name might hard to spell, Unthuk Yuyu or Unthuk Cacing or Kue Akar Kelapa (this known for people live outside of Java). Here is the explanations as I've heard, Unthuk is meaning Undhuk (in Javanese) Gundukan (in Indonesia) or the mound of soil from the worm or crab (if you already know how crab or worm did and how did it like) so that's how the name comes from its shape. Yuyu in Javanese means for river crab, that usually digging the sand on beach or riverside. Worm, is in the same term. Then the last name Akar Kelapa is basically on how people seen its similarity like the root of coconut tree. Since the modified recipe giving better taste, I kindly letting myself enjoy this!
And the last below one is Rengginang, a kind of thick cracker made from sun-dried rice or glutinous rice then fried in large numbers of oil (deep frying mode). Crunchy to the very last (seems I bored to say that!). It is usually made from leftover rice, salt and garlic seasoning in simple way. Though it is simple, it is favorable snack to accompany while watching TV, do household or bring it mobile. Guess it's because I love to eat rice and it is recognized by the same texture? Maybe. In case, there's a bigger version in Central Java named Intip, a same ingredients but made from rice wok (dandang) or crock, a brown looks, sweet delicious in taste by adding sugar brown paste melted on the surface in generally. The funny fact, nothing to expect if these leftover can actually go higher level to be a classy snack.
So what's special of these snacks for they looks so light flavor, simple, ordinary, may find the hard or not tasty edible one, and there's better snack to found, eat, taste and enjoy in the same time? Nothing. It just snack and it should be. The only left and what people might missing are how these snack born from and being into the culture and the memories they might forgot when they grown up, moved, find better snack and with the world changes so fast, we realized some local snack also generously eliminated along with people who dedicated their life to mastered and made these (and all) local snack (in the world) with love in their hand. I believe a passion might alive somehow, love can build but holding the same soul that giving a perfect memories is never be the same. That's why we remained as precious memory, in human and those product. Maybe, it's really a pocketful of thankful sign. And we can only thankful for such memories...
